Function
To read the cards on a 3DS or 2DS, an additional NFC reader/writer is required. This can be purchased individually or in a bundle with Happy Home Designer. The New 3DS already has a corresponding NFC field built in, as does the New 2DS. The Wii U controller also has an NFC field.

Series 1-4
400 amiibo cards have been released for the Animal Crossing series, 100 of which belong to each series. Each series also has its own collector's album. The cards are assigned to two categories. The majority of the cards show normal neighbours. In addition, there are 17 special cards per series (only 16 in series 4), which show special characters.
